Feeling Stressed? Read This.
It’s been eight years since my first book, The Dutiful Daughter’s Guide to Caregiving came out, and last year I decided it was time to write another one. It was going to be about the power of writing to calm and soothe us if we’re overwhelmed or stretched to the max. During my caregiving years, it often saved me when nothing else could. Even the women in my caregiver writing group who met every month for five years said the exact same thing.
In the past several weeks, though, I’ve been dealing with some life issues and it has made me realize that art-making has been healing, as well. And just like writing, I let go of judgement and simply allow myself to be surprised by what appears.
From both experiences, I've come to believe that honoring these two forms of expression can be one of the greatest self-nurturing tools we have at our fingertips. And it's not about the perfect sentence or Best of Show – it's about creating from your heart, often in a community where everyone feels safe to express themselves. And that is the focus of this new book. Would caregivers benefit from it? Most definitely. Yet, so would every woman on the planet who feels exhausted and stressed from the challenges of life. You are my tribe!!!
Out of curiosity, what do you think of when you hear the words “self-nurturing?” For some of you, I bet it's probably not even on the radar. Or maybe you're thinking it's an indulgence and you have too much to do. Or, you picture a bubble bath and a shopping trip for new shoes while you only take showers and wear old sneakers.
I believe it’s a way of giving yourself the same compassion and focus you give others day in and day out. It's about believing you, too, are worthy of your time and attention. To put it another way - It is respite care for your soul.
So, what I'll be doing in the next several newsletters is sharing bits and pieces from the book as it continues to evolve. Of course, there will be stories, some art and writing activities, ideas for putting together creative groups, and lots of laughter because, well, it’s me, here. If you’re smiling and nodding, I hope you’ll come back for more, and bring a friend!
